Phones and networks for retail chains

A store that loses its connection cannot take cards, and a store with a flat network puts every card terminal in audit scope. We build each store the same way, with payments kept apart and a backup connection that takes over on its own.

What stores need

Built around the till

  • Payments kept separate. Card terminals and the point-of-sale system sit on their own network segment, which keeps the rest of the store out of PCI DSS scope as far as possible.
  • Failover that works on a Saturday. A backup connection, often cellular, so card payments keep going when the main line drops.
  • Simple store phones. One or two phones per store, calls that roll to head office or a central team when the store is busy, and recorded announcements with opening hours.
  • Guest Wi-Fi that stays out of the way. Isolated from staff and payments, and limited so it cannot slow the tills.

Openings and refits

New stores on the standard build

Each new store gets the same firewall policy, Wi-Fi design and phone setup, shipped pre-configured with a checklist for the fit-out team. Head office sees the new site in the portal from the day it goes live.

Questions

Multi-site retail questions

Can stores share one main number?

Yes. A central number can route callers to the nearest store or a central team, while each store keeps its own local number.

Does network segmentation make us PCI compliant?

No single control does. Segmentation reduces the part of your network in scope, which makes the rest of the PCI DSS work smaller. Your acquiring bank or assessor decides what you must complete.
