Business phone service / Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Business phone service for Toronto offices with staff across the GTA and beyond.

Toronto firms are rarely in one building. A Bay Street office, staff in Mississauga and Markham, and a sales team covering Ontario and the rest of the country all share the same numbers. Texwan sets up hosted phone systems for that kind of team remotely, programs every phone before it ships and plans 9-1-1 for the people who work away from the office.

Canadian local numbers are added where available from the carrier providing the service, and existing numbers are ported where they can be. Phones are ISED-registered models, so they can be used in Canada.

01 / Threat Briefing

Threat Briefing

The CRTC distinguishes fixed VoIP, which provides enhanced 9-1-1, from nomadic VoIP, which provides basic 9-1-1 and may require callers to state their location. Remote staff on softphones need to know which they have. (CRTC)

ISED requires telephones with handsets, including VoIP phones, to be registered for use in Canada. That matters when hardware is shipped from outside the country. (ISED Canada)

Architecture and Remediation Directives

  • Tell each remote user whether their service is fixed or nomadic for 9-1-1, in writing.
  • Ship only ISED-registered phones and keep the registration numbers on file.
  • Offer English and French in the main menu if you serve customers in both languages.
  • Require MFA and named admin accounts.

04 / Vendor-Neutral Verification Checklist

Vendor-Neutral Verification Checklist

Three checks you can run yourself, with or without us.

  1. Turn over a desk phone and look for the IC: registration number on the label.
  2. Ask a remote user what they would tell a 9-1-1 call taker about their location.
  3. List everyone with admin access and confirm each has MFA.

Legacy and odd setups

Old phone systems in Toronto? We can work with them.

Toronto offices still run Nortel, Mitel and Avaya systems, many of them installed when Nortel was a local name. We can keep that hardware on SIP trunks through a gateway while users move to hosted service, and keep fax, paging and door lines working.

Phone rules and practicalities in Canada

TopicWhat to know
Emergency callsFixed VoIP services in Canada provide enhanced 9-1-1, while nomadic VoIP services provide basic 9-1-1, where the caller may have to state their location. Providers must tell customers about these limits. (CRTC)
Next-generation 9-1-1Canada’s 9-1-1 networks are moving to next-generation 9-1-1 under CRTC oversight. We plan location data with that in mind. (CRTC)
Local numbersCanadian local numbers where available from the carrier providing the service. We confirm availability before quoting.
Keeping your numbersCanadian numbers can usually be ported between carriers. We check each number before a date is set.
HardwareISED requires telephones with handsets, including VoIP phones, to be registered for use in Canada. We only ship models that carry an ISED registration number. (ISED Canada)
Power and plugsCanadian mains matches the US, so US power adapters work.
ShippingHardware ships from the United States. Import duties, taxes and customs fees may apply on arrival and depend on the shipping terms we agree in the quote.

This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change, so we confirm current requirements for your setup before quoting.

How it works

Remote setup, phones shipped ready to use

  1. Review. Send us your current bill or a list of numbers, users and sites. We map extensions, call flows and anything unusual.
  2. Build. We build the system for your country’s dial plan and emergency numbers and program each phone (Yealink, Yeastar, Grandstream or Sangoma), choosing models that suit local power, plugs and radio rules.
  3. Ship. Phones ship from the US pre-configured and labeled. Import duties, taxes and customs clearance depend on the destination and the shipping terms, which we agree in the quote.
  4. Port and support. Existing numbers are ported only where the country’s rules and the carriers allow, on a date you approve. Support is remote, with every request answered within one business day.

Questions

Toronto business phone FAQ

Can we get Toronto numbers?

Usually, where available from the carrier providing the service. We confirm before quoting, and existing numbers can often be ported.

Do you have staff in Toronto?

No. Setup and support are remote, and phones ship pre-configured. If cabling or on-site work is needed, we scope it with you.

How does 9-1-1 work for softphone users?

It depends on whether the service is fixed or nomadic under CRTC rules. We set location data where possible and explain any limits to each user.
